Our University 2024 English Language and Literature Academic Festival
The Cheongdae Times Regular reporter Yu-chan Lee
The Department of English Language and Literature at our university held its Academic Festival on December 3rd from 4 PM to 6 PM in the basement seminar room of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. This event was organized as a place for students of the department to present their preparations in English based on their studies and experiences and share various academic exchanges. ▲ Photos of students conducting the academic festival.
In the first part, English presentations were conducted. Three teams of students captivated the audience with their fluent English as they presented their topics within the allotted 15 minutes. Their presentations stood out for their academic analysis across diverse fields and creative approaches, showcasing their ability to articulate ideas precisely in English.
Kim Young-eun, a student from the Department of English Literature, who participated in the English presentation, said, “Our team’s topic is ESG management. We chose this topic because ESG is an important management method that is emerging in society these days. We wanted to introduce ESG management, a topic not covered in our English Literature courses and explain it in a more accessible way using videos and charts. Although it’s not a subject typically addressed within our department, we chose to present it in English to highlight the unique strengths of the English Language and Literature major. I was nervous during the presentation, which made it challenging to control my speaking pace and emphasize key points. However, this experience helped reduce my fear of speaking in front of an audience and allowed me to improve my skills, making it a meaningful opportunity for growth,” she added. ▲ Photos of students receiving awards. In the second part, participants gave presentations on various topics such as international exchange programs and language study abroad experiences, teaching jobs, and club activities. The seniors' vivid experiences were very helpful to the juniors, and a lively Q&A session followed.
After the presentations, an awards ceremony was held to honor outstanding presenters, with all participants receiving enthusiastic applause. Professors then provided feedback on each presentation, giving students direction and suggestions for improvement. The professors' detailed and thoughtful advice served as a great source of motivation for the students, providing them with valuable insights and making it a precious opportunity for growth. ▲ Photos of students taking pictures at the photo zone.
At the entrance of the venue, a photo zone was set up, allowing students to capture memories of the Academic Festival. In a warm and cheerful atmosphere, students took photos and congratulated each other on their achievements as the event.
Professor Kang Yoo-jin from the Department of English Literature shared, “I’m glad that this English Academic Festival served as a great opportunity to strengthen the bond within our department. The fact that students presented in English using assignments or topics from courses offered in the department was a significant opportunity.”
Professor Bae Su-young, the head of the Department of English Literature, said, “I was impressed with the way the students delivered the content they had prepared. When reconstructing necessary information and presenting it in English, it’s important to consider the audience. Seeing how students effectively expressed technical terms and formal English in a manner suited to the audience and format shows that they’ve learned a lot.”
The faculty of the Department of English Language and Literature said, “The key focus while preparing for the English Academic Festival was to convey as much information and as many opportunities as possible to the students. We hoped that through this festival, students would develop a greater fondness for the department and feel a stronger sense of belonging.” They continued, “We hope students will understand the identity of the English department and realize that there is so much to gain from the department.” ▲ Photos of students participating in the academic festival. This academic festival became an opportunity to share academic achievements, discuss career paths and experiences, and strengthen the sense of community among the department members. The students said, “We learned a lot from preparing the presentation and the feedback from professors and students was very helpful.”
In the future, the Department of English Language and Literature will continue to provide opportunities for sharing academic activities and practical experiences, supporting the growth of its students.
