Carbon Neutrality 2050 and ESG Discussion Held in Chungbuk Regional Industrial Complex
Regular reporter Hoseok An
On Wednesday, November 13, the Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development held a discussion on ‘Carbon Neutrality 2050 and ESG of Chungbuk Regional Industrial Complexes’ at Cheongju University and explored ways to realize carbon neutrality in regional industrial complexes. Chungcheongbuk-do is paying attention to the role of industrial complexes in achieving the carbon neutrality goal.
The Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development is a public-private cooperation promotion organization that pursues sustainable development based on the establishment and recommendation of ‘Local Agenda 21’ by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNECD) in 1992. This is an organization that serves as a platform for establishing and implementing the Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development Goals (C-SDGs) at the Chungcheongbuk-do level in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN in September 2015. The event on this day began with the opening ceremony in the first part, and the welcoming remarks were given by Hong Sang-pyo, the standing chairman of the Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development, Kim Yong-eun, the chairman of the Chungcheongbuk-do Regional Association of the Federation of Korean Science and Technology Societies, and Kim Young-bae, the director of the Regional Value Creation Center at Cheongju University. ▲ This is a photo of an event held at Cheongju University. / Phicture provide by Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development
Currently, fossil fuels are the most widely used in the world, emitting a lot of carbon. The same is true for our Republic of Korea, and Chungcheongbuk-do as well. Therefore, the Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development has held discussions with various stakeholder groups to propose regional sustainable development policy agendas and resolve current issues in order to implement sustainable development in Chungcheongbuk-do. ▲ This is a photo of Professor Lee Hong-chan speaking. / Provide by Chungcheongbuk-do Council for Sustainable Development
In addition, in terms of sustainability, the creation of an eco-friendly industrial complex to respond to the climate crisis is a task necessary in terms of the social, economic, and environmental aspects of the region, and a forum for discussion was set up with various stakeholder groups in the region to identify the agenda. Professor Lee Hong-chan responded, “We should present a plan to realize carbon neutrality that takes into account the characteristics of Chungbuk industry and create a synergy effect through cooperation between the industry and the government.”
Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Assembly Member Lee Sang-jeong responded, “Today, we had a very useful discussion on how to realize carbon neutrality and ESG, which are common tasks for all of us.”
“More than 70% of all fine dust in Chungbuk is emitted from manufacturing plants. Therefore, it is very necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from factories and contribute to carbon neutrality.” He responded, saying that greenhouse gases emitted by industries in the Chungbuk region should be reduced and such measures were sought.
In addition to methods for reducing greenhouse gases in industries, methods that ordinary citizens can use to reduce them were also introduced. These are methods for reducing greenhouse gases emitted in our daily lives. Most waste emits a lot of greenhouse gases when incinerated. Therefore, ordinary citizens should separate their waste to reduce the amount of waste they incinerate. Also, using public transportation to reduce greenhouse gases emitted from ordinary vehicles is a way to reduce greenhouse gases.
In addition, Lee Sang-jeong, a member of the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Assembly, said, “This summer of 2024 was extremely hot, and even in the fall, it was hot at 20 degrees. I think this is an abnormal climate. Since the Industrial Revolution, the temperature of the Earth has risen to about 1.2 degrees, and I think we need to reduce this temperature by even 0.2 degrees. Therefore, we need to be alert to this situation and make efforts, and we need a lot of interest from young people.” He said that the seriousness of our society and the interest of young people are necessary.
The event was a good event that laid the foundation for establishing a carbon neutral transition base in Chungcheongbuk-do and expected that carbon neutrality would improve citizens’ policy efficacy through systems and related policies. |
