We are in an era of transformation for university teaching, with methods constantly evolving. As hybrid learning, which combines online and in-person instruction, becomes more common, students have more options in how they learn. In response, our university opened 11 new HyFlex classrooms for the 2024 school year to improve the learning environment for students. These new facilities include room 325 in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and room 312 in the College of Business.

 

The term HyFlex combines "hybrid learning" and "flexible" to describe a next-generation teaching model. Rather than adhering to the traditional instructor-centered model with a fixed schedule, HyFlex prioritizes the student's choice. Students enrolled in these courses have the option to participate either in person or remotely, choosing to engage live in real time or to view recordings at their convenience. This is significant because it involves more than merely altering the delivery of lectures; it enhances flexibility by empowering students to select their preferred learning methods. This enables students to proactively create a study plan tailored to their individual needs and commitments, such as a part-time job.

Our university’s HyFlex classrooms use advanced technology to create a truly interactive learning environment. Features like student-tracking cameras and a 98-inch interactive display provide an immersive experience for everyone involved. Meanwhile, a full lecture recording system and advanced ceiling microphones guarantee consistent audio and video quality, regardless of time or location. This is especially meaningful because our university is the first in the cheongdae Times Newspapercheongbuk-do region to fully implement such a system.

 

Beyond the technical innovation, a key benefit of this pioneering system is its significant impact on international students. For the 4,200 students from 37 countries on our campus, the HyFlex rooms feature a powerful "AI Translation Captioning System." The process is simple: microphones capture the lecture in Korean, a specialized AI engine translates it in real time, and captions instantly appear on classroom screens. This directly tackles the language barrier, reducing the academic pressure on international students and helping them thrive in a new environment.

 

Our university's initiatives to improve the learning environment extend beyond the construction of new classrooms. To develop future industry leaders, it also provides Problem-Based Learning (PBL) courses. This approach, incorporating both Problem-Based and Project-Based Learning, departs from traditional lectures by empowering students to take charge of their own creative learning. Since 2022, this policy has required all students to complete one of three foundational courses: Logical Writing, Critical Reading and Discussion, or Creative Speaking. By engaging students in teamwork and encouraging them to lead their own discussions, PBL is designed to cultivate essential skills that modern students require, including critical thinking and effective communication.

 

Through its implementation of student-led PBL courses and the accessible, learn-anywhere environment of HyFlex classrooms, our university is not just adopting new methods—it is actively shaping the future of education. Core features of this model, such as real-time lecture recordings and seamless digital interaction, do more than just improve grades. They fundamentally transform students from passive listeners into active participants in their own learning. By continuing to merge innovative teaching with powerful technology, our university is solidifying its position as a hub for talent focused on the future. Through these efforts, it is cultivating the proactive leaders that tomorrow's industries will demand.

최근 대학 수업은 방식이 점차 다양해지고 있다. 온라인과 오프라인을 넘나드는 수업 방식이 확산되는 것으로 인해 학생들은 더 많은 학습 선택권을 갖는다. 우리대학도 이런 변화에 맞추어 학생들에게 보다 나은 학습 환경을 제공하기 위해 인문사회대학 325호, 비즈니스대학 312호를 비롯하여 총 11개의 하이플렉스 강의실을 2024학년도에 새롭게 구축했다.

 

하이플렉스(Hyflex) 강의는 하이브리드 학습(Hybrid Learning)과 유연성(flexible)의 합성어로, 기존의 교수자 중심 학습모델을 넘어선 미래형 수업 방식을 의미한다. 하이플렉스 강의를 수강하는 학생들은 대면과 비대면 그리고 실시간과 비실시간 중 원하는 방식을 자유롭게 선택할 수 있다. 단순히 강의 전달 방식이 달라진 것이 아니라 학생들이 스스로 학습 방법을 선택할 수 있는 권한을 갖게 된다는 점에서 학습의 유연성을 극대화한 의미가 크다. 이를 통해 학생들은 주도적으로 자신에게 적합한 학습의 형태를 선택한다.

우리대학 하이플렉스 강의실은 실시간으로 교수자와 학습자 그리고 학습자와 학습자 간 상호작용할 수 있는 교수자 추적 카메라, 학생용 추적 카메라, 전자교탁 시스템, 98인치 전자칠판, 모니터링 모니터, 강의 녹화 시스템, 빔포밍 마이크(천장형 음성추적 마이크) 등의 최첨단 장비를 갖추고 있다. 혁신적인 학습 환경은 학생들에게 몰입감 있는 수업 경험을 제공하며 장소와 시간에 구애받지 않는 안정적인 강의 품질을 보장한다. 특히 충청북도 지역 대학 중 우리대학이 최초로 본격 도입했다는 점에서 더욱 의미가 깊다.

 

하이플렉스 강의는 온라인과 오프라인 학습의 경계를 허무는 것에 그치지 않는다. 우리대학 하이플렉스 강의는 특히 유학생들에게도 큰 도움이 되고 있다. 현재 37개국 4,200여 명의 유학생이 재학 중인 우리대학은 유학생 교육환경 개선을 위해 도입한 'AI번역 자막 시스템'을 하이플렉스 강의실에서 활용하고 있다. AI 자막 시스템은 교수가 한국어로 강의를 하면 강의실에 설치된 마이크가 인식하여 온라인으로 전송한 뒤 번역 전문 인공지능(AI)이 외국어로 번역해 강의실에 설치한 화면에 띄워 준다. 따라서 하이플렉스 강의는 이들이 언어와 생활 환경의 차이로 겪는 학습의 부담을 감소시켜 주는 역할을 수행한다.

 

또한 우리 대학은 하이플렉스 강의실 구축 뿐만 아니라 미래 산업을 주도할 수 있는 역량을 갖춘 인재를 양성하기 위해 PBL 수업도 운영하고 있다. PBL은 Problem Based Learning(문제 기반 학습)과 Project Based Learning(프로젝트 기반 학습)의 약자로 전통적인 교실과 강의 학습에서 벗어나 학생 주도의 창의적 학습 패러다임을 반영한 교육방식을 의미한다. 2022학번부터는 전 학과 학생들이 논리적 글쓰기, 비판적 읽기와 토론, 창의적 말하기 교과목 중 1개의 강의를 필수로 이수해야 한다. 하나의 논제로 학생들이 팀을 이루어 토론하는 방식으로 진행하는 등 PBL 수업은 우리 대학 학생이 비판적 사고와 의사소통 능력을 높이는 교육적 장치로 자리잡고 있다.

 

우리대학은 언제 어디서나 학습할 수 있는 환경을 제공하는 하이플렉스 강의와 학생의 주도로 이뤄지는 PBL 수업을 통해 미래형 교육을 실천하고 있다. 특히 하이플렉스 강의는 전통적인 수업 방식을 경험했던 학생들에게 새로운 학습 경험을 제공한다. 하이플렉스 강의실에서 진행되는 수업을 수강하고 있는 학생 중 한 명으로서 수업이 실시간으로 녹화되는 강의 녹화 시스템이 하이플렉스 수업의 장점이라고 생각한다. 수업 내용을 반복해서 확인할 수 있어 학습효과를 직접 체감할 수 있었다. 교수와 학생 그리고 학생 간의 상호 소통도 원활한 점이 수업의 몰입도를 높이는 것이 하이플렉스 강의가 갖는 특징이다. 결과적으로 하이플렉스 강의는 수업을 듣는 것이 아니라 능동적으로 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 때문에 우리대학 학생이라면 하이플렉스 강의를 수강하여 학습의 형태를 경험하기를 바란다.
