 Our University Boosts Students’ Path to the World

  During the summer holiday following the first semester, students from our university took part in the Summer English Program at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. Our University's Office of International Exchange operates various international exchange programs based on a network of 260 sister universities in 31 countries around the world to support students and strengthen global competitiveness. Currently, our university provides 19 overseas exchange programs, offering customized opportunities such as short-term cultural experiences, vacation language courses, semester-long study, degree programs, and internships to match students’ individual levels and goals.

  The language training program at partner universities has emerged as one of the most popular international exchange opportunities among students. This program, which dispatches students to partner universities abroad to undertake both language training and regular academic courses, consistently garners high satisfaction. This is largely because participants can earn up to 18 credits towards their home university graduation without taking a leave of absence, while paying home university tuition fees to study at prestigious international institutions. Furthermore, a significant advantage is the ability to access high-quality education at a reduced cost through special agreements with our partner universities.

 

 

 This year, the language program at the prestigious University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom drew significant attention from students. The participating students were able to build academic confidence by experiencing a discussion and presentation-oriented learning style, along with systematic English classes. In addition, they achieved valuable outcomes by immersing themselves in British culture through dormitory life and various cultural experiences, and by forming a global network through exchanges with international students. Beyond a simple language program, this training served as both a challenge and an opportunity for growth, as participants engaged with local students and directly experienced a discussion and presentation-oriented learning style.

 

 

 Chey Naomi, a student who participated in the UK language immersion program, said, “Spending time in the UK with friends from different countries gave me a valuable opportunity to reflect on myself in a new way. What left a strong impression on me was living with my Japanese friends and collaborating and supporting each other based on the shared understanding that ‘we are all foreigners.’ This experience seemed to foster a sense of solidarity among us Asian students, which helped me adapt more easily. It also prompted me to think more seriously about my future, including pursuing graduate studies abroad or working internationally. Living abroad gave me the confidence that I can adapt successfully in a foreign environment, and it motivated me to challenge myself and explore my potential on a larger stage.”

 

 She also emphasized, “Above all, I believe that gaining firsthand experience during the program is the most important thing. While studying is important, I would also recommend visiting various cities in the UK. Each city has its own unique atmosphere, so just experiencing the UK is meaningful enough, and you can learn more from travel. It will be a good experience if you take the courage to approach locals who go out to the park and exercise or enjoy picnics,” offering practical advice that could help students prepare for their next opportunity.

 Classes at the University of Sheffield were conducted entirely in English with a strong focus on group activities where students discussed various topics and presented their ideas. Through this program, students were able to develop not only their language skills but also their critical thinking and teamwork abilities. Looking at the actual timetable, students could improve their basic English skills in the morning through the Language Development class, while in the afternoon, they could choose from optional classes such as Business, Cultural Exchange, Teaching, Pronunciation, and Conversation, allowing them to focus on areas of personal interest. Additionally, literature lectures and online courses provided opportunities to learn about British literature and culture. Every afternoon, a variety of social activities were organized, allowing students to interact naturally with peers from around the world, practice their language skills, and engage in cultural exchange outside the classroom.

 Tomoya Morita, a student from Tokyo who participated in the UK program, said, “I thought the teaching methods were excellent because they allow students to verbally answer the questions. Moreover, the experience of living in the UK itself was incredibly valuable to me. Firstly, the UK is the origin of English, so I was able to experience real English. Secondly, by adapting to the lifestyle of people from another country, I was able to experience cultural differences, both good and bad, and discover different values. I believe the best way to improve my English skills is to engage in direct conversations with people in English. And you can also learn aspects of different cultures that you've never experienced before. For this reason, I strongly encourage future students to actively engage in conversations with people from other countries.”

 Nana, a student from Osaka who participated in the UK program, said, “One of the most memorable experiences was having conversations in English with international students and realizing that my thoughts were understood. In class, I often had opportunities to share my opinions, and when paired with international students, it was sometimes harder to communicate compared to when I worked with Japanese students. However, I tried to speak as much as possible, and when I was able to get my point across, I felt really happy. As for activities, the most memorable one was going to a place called Castleton, which is famous for its mountain with one of my Korean classmates. It was really enjoyable to do activities together with people who speak different languages and to talk about our hometowns and cultures. Even now, we still keep in touch by sending messages. Making friends with international students is something that I could only experience through studying abroad, and it was truly wonderful.”

 

 She also said, “At my current part-time job, I often meet customers from overseas. In the past, I could only manage the minimum necessary English, but recently I have been able to have small conversations as well. This is because, through my study abroad experience, I learned that even with my limited English, people made a real effort to understand me. That gave me the confidence to speak without being afraid of making mistakes.”

 

 

 This language program provided students with more than just language skills; it gave them the confidence to believe, ‘I can do it.’ Our university's international exchange program goes beyond simple language learning and opens up a wide range of possibilities for students to communicate with the world and prepare for the future. The language program at the University of Sheffield stands as a notable example of realizing this potential, serving as a key turning point in strengthening the global competencies of our university’s students.

이번 1학기가 끝난 여름 방학, 우리대학 학생들은 영국 셰필드 대학교에서 진행된 하계방학영어 프로그램에 참여하며 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈다. 청주대학교 국제교류처는 전 세계 31개국 260여 개 자매대학 네트워크를 바탕으로, 다양한 국제교류 프로그램을 운영하며 학생들의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화를 지원하고 있다. 현재 청주대학교는 19가지 해외파견 국제교류 프로그램을 통해 단기문화체험, 방학연수, 학기과정 연수, 정규과정, 인턴십 등 학생들의 수준과 목표에 맞는 맞춤형 기회를 제공하고 있다.

특히, 자매대학 어학연수 프로그램은 많은 학생들에게 각광받고 있는 대표적인 국제교류 프로그램이다. 외국 자매대학에 파견되어 어학연수 과정과 정규과정을 수강하는 이 프로그램은 휴학 없이 최대 18학점까지 본교 졸업학점으로 인정받을 수 있으며, 본교 등록금으로 해외 명문대학에서 수학할 수 있다는 점에서 높은 만족도를 보이고 있다. 또한, 자매대학과의 특별 협정으로 수준 높은 교육을 저렴한 비용으로 제공받을 수 있다는 점도 큰 장점이다.

 

 

올해는 특히 영국의 명문 셰필드 대학교에서의 어학연수가 학생들 사이에서 큰 주목을 받았다. 참여 학생들은 체계적인 영어 수업과 더불어 토론·발표 중심의 학업 방식을 경험하며 학문적 자신감을 기를 수 있었다. 또한 기숙사 생활과 다양한 문화 체험을 통해 영국 현지 문화를 생생하게 접하고, 국제 학생들과의 교류를 통해 글로벌 네트워크를 형성하는 등 값진 성과를 거두었다. 단순한 어학 연수를 넘어, 현지 학생들과 어울리며 토론하고 발표하는 수업 방식을 직접 경험할 수 있었던 이번 연수는 참가자들에게 큰 도전이자 성장의 기회였다.

 

 

이번 영국 어학연수 프로그램에 참여한 최서현 학생은 “영국에서 외국인 친구들과 함께 지내면서 제 자신을 새롭게 돌아볼 수 있는 기회가 되었습니다. 특히 일본인 친구들과 함께 지내며 “우리 모두 외국인”이라는 공감대를 바탕으로 협력하고 의지했던 경험이 인상 깊었습니다. 자연스럽게 아시아 학생들 간의 연대감이 생겨 더 잘 적응할 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 그리고 이번 경험을 통해 해외 대학원 진학이나 해외 취업과 같은 진로를 좀 더 진지하게 고민하게 되었습니다. 실제로 외국에서 생활하면서도 충분히 적응할 수 있다는 자신감을 얻게 되었고, 앞으로 더 넓은 무대에서 제 가능성을 시험해보고 싶다는 동기를 얻었습니다” 라고 답하였다.

 

 

또한 “무엇보다도 연수 기간 동안 본인이 직접 경험을 많이 해보는 것이 가장 중요하다고 생각합니다. 공부도 중요하지만, 영국의 다양한 도시를 방문해보는 것도 추천하고 싶습니다. 도시마다 분위기가 크게 달라 영국만 경험하는 것만으로도 충분히 의미 있고, 여행을 통해 더 많은 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 공원에 나가서 운동을 하거나 피크닉을 즐기는 현지인들에게 용기 내서 다가가면 좋은 경험이 될 겁니다” 라고 답하며 다음 기회를 준비하는 학생들에게 도움이 될 만한 현실적인 조언을 건넸다.

셰필드 대학교의 수업은 철저히 영어로 진행되었으며, 그룹 활동을 통해 다양한 주제를 토론하고 이를 발표하는 형식이 중심을 이루었다. 학생들은 이 과정을 통해 언어 능력뿐만 아니라 논리적 사고와 협업 능력을 함께 기를 수 있었다. 실제 시간표를 보면 오전에는 Language Development 수업으로 기본적인 영어 실력을 향상시킬 수 있고, 오후에는 선택 과목(Option Class)으로 비즈니스, 문화교류, 교직 수업, 발음 및 회화 등으로 자신이 원하는 분야의 강의를 선택할 수 있다, 또한 문학 수업(Lecture Class), 온라인 강의 등을 통해 영국의 문학과 문화를 배울 수 있다. 매일 오후에는 다양한 Social Activities가 마련되어 있어, 교실 밖에서도 세계 각국의 학생들과 자연스럽게 어울리며 언어를 배우고 문화를 교류할 수 있었다.

 

 

이번 영국 프로그램에 참여한 일본 도쿄에서온 Tomoya Morita 학생은 “저는 수업 방식이 매우 좋다고 생각했습니다. 특히 학생들에게 질문에 직접 말로 답할 수 있는 기회를 주는 점이 인상적이었습니다. 그리고 영국에서 생활한 경험 자체가 저에게는 매우 소중했습니다. 우선 영어의 본고장에서 실제 영어를 접할 수 있었던 점이 가장 의미 있었습니다. 또 다른 나라 사람들의 생활 방식에 적응하면서 좋든 나쁘든 다양한 문화적 차이를 직접 경험할 수 있었고, 이를 통해 서로 다른 가치관을 새롭게 발견할 수 있었습니다. 제가 생각한 영어 실력을 향상시키는 가장 좋은 방법은 사람들과 직접 영어로 대화하는 것입니다. 그 과정에서 이전에 경험해보지 못했던 다양한 문화적 요소도 접할 수 있었습니다. 그래서 저는 앞으로 올 학생들이 외국인들과 대화에 적극적으로 참여해보기를 꼭 권하고 싶습니다” 라고 답하였다.

이번 영국 프로그램에 참여한 일본 오사카에서온 Nana 학생은 “가장 기억에 남는 순간 중 하나는 국제 학생들과 영어로 대화하면서 제 생각이 상대방에게 전달된다는 것을 실감했을 때였습니다. 수업 시간에도 의견을 말할 기회가 자주 있었고, 일본인 학생들과 함께할 때보다 국제 학생들과 짝을 이루었을 때는 의사소통이 더 어려울 때도 있었습니다. 그럼에도 최대한 많이 이야기하려고 노력했고, 제 의도를 제대로 전달할 수 있었을 때는 정말 기뻤습니다. 활동 중에서는 ‘캐슬턴(Castleton)’이라는 산으로 유명한 곳에 한국인 동급생과 함께 다녀온 것이 가장 기억에 남습니다. 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 사람들과 함께 활동하며 고향이나 문화를 이야기한 것이 매우 즐거웠고, 지금도 메시지를 주고받으며 연락을 이어가고 있습니다. 유학생활을 통해서만 가능한 국제 학생들과의 우정이었기에 더욱 특별했고, 정말 소중한 경험이었습니다” 라고 답하였다.

 

 

또한 “현재 아르바이트를 하면서 해외에서 온 손님들을 자주 만나는데, 예전에는 꼭 필요한 말만 할 수 있었던 반면, 최근에는 간단한 대화까지 이어갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 이는 연수 경험을 통해 비록 제한된 영어 실력이라도 상대방이 이해하려고 노력해준다는 것을 알게 되었고, 그 덕분에 실수를 두려워하지 않고 자신 있게 말할 수 있게 되었기 때문이라고 생각합니다” 라고 답하였다.

 

 

이번 어학연수는 학생들에게 단순히 언어 능력을 넘어, '할 수 있다' 는 자신감을 심어주는 계기가 되었다. 청주대학교 국제교류 프로그램은 단순한 언어 학습을 넘어, 학생들에게 세계와 소통하며 미래를 준비할 수 있는 폭넓은 가능성을 열어주고 있다. 이번 셰필드 대학교 어학연수는 그 가능성을 실현한 대표적인 사례로, 청주대학교 학생들의 글로벌 역량 강화에 중요한 전환점이 되고 있다.
