2025 Nightingale Pledge Ceremony at the College of Nursing

On April 29, 2025, at 2:00 PM, the 15th Nightingale Pledge Ceremony was held at Cheongam Hall in the College of Health and Medical Sciences. The Nightingale Pledge Ceremony is a solemn event where nursing students pledge to uphold the ethics and responsibilities of the nursing profession before beginning their clinical practice. It carries the spirit of Florence Nightingale, the symbol of nursing, and is the largest event held by the Department of Nursing.

Our university's Department of Nursing was established in 2009 with an initial enrollment of 40 students and has since grown to accommodate 447 students. This year, 101 third-year nursing students—18 male and 83 female—participated in the pledge ceremony. Following the ceremony, the third-year students will begin their clinical practice on May 5 at institutions including Asan Medical Center in Seoul, National Cancer Center, Chungbuk National University Hospital, Cheongju St. Mary's Hospital, and Sejong Chungnam National University Hospital.

The Nightingale Pledge Ceremony included a welcoming speech by the department head, candle-lighting ritual, recitation of the Nightingale Pledge, words of encouragement, scholarship awards, gift presentations, a congratulatory song, the school anthem, and a closing address. Parents, nursing students from other years, university officials, and hospital representatives attended the ceremony to celebrate and support the students. The university president delivered congratulatory remarks, saying, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations and encouragement to all of you who pledged as future nurses today. I hope each of you achieves great success in the future.”

As a student who experienced the Nightingale Pledge Ceremony a year ago, I can deeply relate to how much effort the juniors must have put in to get to this point. Third-year nursing students must take their midterm exams in March and final exams in April in preparation for clinical practice during the semester. This means they must complete a 15-week semester within just two months—a highly demanding academic schedule. On top of that, preparing for the pledge ceremony while dealing with intensive coursework, challenging major classes, and a heavy load of assignments must have kept them extremely busy. I went through the same experience, and I remember that it was a time of both physical and emotional exhaustion.

After completing the intense academic schedule of March and April, students participate in the solemn Nightingale Pledge Ceremony. It’s a moment that brings a sense of pride and fulfillment, a realization that all the hard work has paid off. Standing there, you truly feel the honor of being a future medical professional.

I believe the junior students must have felt the same emotions. After the pledge ceremony, I was filled with both excitement and anxiety about starting clinical practice. To the third-year nursing students who may be feeling nervous about their upcoming hospital training, I want to say that you’ve done an excellent job so far. Having completed such a difficult journey, I’m confident you will perform just as well during clinical practice.

I sincerely hope that this year’s Nightingale Pledge Ceremony becomes a driving force for our nursing students at Cheongju University in their pursuit of their dreams of becoming nurses.

2025년 간호학과 나이팅게일 선서식

2025년 4월 29일 오후 2시 보건의료과학대학 청암홀에서 제 15회 나이팅게일 선서식이 진행되었다. 나이팅게일 선서식이란 간호학과 학생들이 임상실습에 나가기 전, 간호사로서의 윤리와 사명을 다할 것을 다짐하는 의식이다. 간호의 상징인 플로렌스 나이팅게일의 정신을 계승한다는 의미를 담고 있다. 간호학과에서 진행되는 가장 큰 행사이다.

우리 대학 간호학과는 2009년 40명의 정원으로 신설되어 현재 147명으로 증원되었다. 나이팅게일 선서식을 참여한 3학년은 남학생 18명, 여학생 83명 총 101명이 재학 중이다. 간호학과 3학년 학생들은 나이팅 게일 선서식 이후 5월 5일부터 서울아산병원, 국립암센터, 충북대학교병원, 청주성모병원, 세종충남대 병원 등으로 임상 실습을 시행한다.

나이팅게일선서식은 학과장님의 인사말, 촛불의식, 나이팅게일 선서, 격려사, 장학금 수여, 선물 증정, 축가, 교가제창, 폐회 순으로 진행되었다. 학생들의 나선식을 축하해주기 위해 학부모님들과 간호학과 선후배 학생들이 참석하였다. 총장님과 대학 관계자, 병원 관계자분들도 참석하여 나선식 자리를 빛내주었다. 김윤배 총장님은 “오늘 나이팅게일 선서를 한 예비 간호사 여러분에게 진심으로 축하와 격려를 보내며 여러분 모두의 앞날에 큰 성취가 있기를 바란다”고 격려의 말씀을 전했다.

1년 전 나이팅게일 선서식을 경험했던 학생으로서 후배들이 지금까지 얼마나 힘든 과정을 해내왔을지 공감할 수 있었다. 간호학과 3학년 학생은 학기 중에 실습을 나가기 위해 3월에 중간고사를 치르고, 4월에 기말고사를 치른다. 15주차의 수업을 2달 내에 마쳐야하는 바쁜 학업 일정을 수행해야 한다. 나이팅게일 선서식을 준비하기 전 처음 경험하는 2배 수업과 어려워진 전공 수업, 많은 과제로 많이 바빴을 것이다. 필자 또한 경험했던 과정이다. 당시를 떠올려보면 정말 체력적으로도, 심리적으로도 정말 힘들었던 시기다.

힘들었던 3월, 4월의 학업을 마치고 나면 나선식을 진행하게 된다. 경건한 분위기의 나선식을 하게 되면 ‘내가 지금까지 열심히 해왔구나’라는 생각이들며 뿌듯함과 스스로에 대한 대견함이 밀려온다. 그리고 이제 병원 실습에 나갈 자격을 갖추었다는 것에 대한 성취감과 내가 예비 의료인임을 몸소 깨달으며 경건한 마음이 든다.

후배 학생들도 동일한 감정을 느꼈을 것이라 생각된다. 나선식을 마친 이후에는 병원 실습에 대한 설렘과 걱정으로 가득 했던 것 같다. 병원 실습을 앞두고 긴장하고 있을 3학년 간호학과 학생들에게 지금까지 잘 해왔고, 지난 어려운 과정들을 성공적으로 마쳤기 때문에 실습도 휼륭하게 해낼 수 있을 것이라고 말해주고 싶다.

간호사를 꿈 꾸는 우리대학 간호학과 학생들에게 이번 나이팅게일 선서식이 목표를 이루기 위한 원동력이 되었기를 바란다.
